We wanted to upgrade our 100-year-old Chicago bungalow

5/5

The investment we made in a new aluminum slate style shingle roof was much more than we wanted to spend, but when we analyzed the pros and cons, including the cost, it came out ahead. We wanted to upgrade our 100-year-old Chicago bungalow and, in particular, rejuvenate the attic and basement spaces. We also want to install a solar panel array on the roof while the current incentives with the IRS, the state and the utility net metering system are still in effect. We wanted to reduce the massive composite shingle tonnage that is covering the incredible sea of roofs across the land. This is undoubtedly a rather large carbon footprint and the short lifespan of many roofs (10-15 years) are causing us to fill and foul unsustainable dumpsites.

The weight of our aluminum roof is less than 850 lbs., compared to 3-4 tons of architectural composite shingles. The Interlock roof is a lifetime roof warrantied for 50 years. When/if it is ever replaced, it will be completely recycle-able.

Much of the heat captured by composite shingle roofs is reflected by the aluminum. Previously, our attic could reach temperatures near 130°F. We have seen a significant reduction in afternoon attic temps, 10-20 degrees.

The installers, Jesse, Sal and Ben were very professional, safe and kind to us. They took the extra time to do it right and solve problems rather than take an easier route. They maintained social distancing and wore masks when necessary. They screwed down OSB sheathing on the existing 100-year-old deck boards which are stamped Sterling Lumber and Supply Co. “The Yards with the Stock”. This company was located two blocks from our house in the early 1900s. Interlock continues a tradition from Sterling Lumber to build to last a lifetime. The original 1919 roof rafters were 2″x4″x16′ and held up under numerous Chicago blizzards and storms. Prior to the project, we augmented the rafters with 2″x6″x16′ #1 southern yellow pine. Hopefully, the roof will bear another century of Chicago climate change.

The Interlock Industries’ workers installed 95 snow guards to breakup snow slides off the roof. The roof is very attractive and my neighbors have complemented the looks of it. The siding on the dormers were also replaced with the aluminum shingles. We had a choice of several shingle colors and chose one called gunflint. The shingles have a slate-like surface that is embossed on the aluminum to give it a textured appearance and perhaps breakup wind and water flows. The Interlock installers removed and sheathed over the chimney and vent caps and added a ridge vent. They installed soffit vents which apparently were never a feature of the house. They removed the gutters and reinstalled them in order to fit the drip edge flashing and lock down the shingles. Everything is fastened with screws powered by cordless screw guns. They did not use air compressors. They had safety lanyards attached to the ridge and foot boards around the perimeter of the roof throughout the installation.

We are very satisfied with the look of our new roof and ready to install solar panels which won’t have to be removed to re-roof because the roof will probably last longer than the solar panels. We are not young anymore and the long-term value of this project will most likely benefit others and the neighborhood more than us, but for the time being, we are happy customers.

Made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!

Not only was the sales process easy, the installation guys were very respectful of my neighbors and my comfort while they were working. Now that it’s done I absolutely love the roof. It’s already made a huge difference in my electric use for cooling the house!

It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house

5/5

We are so proud of our new roof. It is so cool looking, it adds a great deal to the curb-appeal of our house. I also appreciate the security of knowing I’ll never have to replace it or worry about it in even the strongest winds. I used to lose shingles in strong windstorms. Interlock was easy to work with. The workers were very respectful of my property and were meticulous about clean up after.

Considering the amount of man hours put into the installation, I got a bargain!

5/5

John M. was the third roofing sales consultant I talked to, and I had two more scheduled. After listening to John explain all the advantages of the InterLock System and materials, I was 95% sold but I thought it might be a little out of my price range. I was going to wait and hear from the other two roofers before I made my decision. John asked me what it would take for me to make my decision right then. I told him, and he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. I cancelled the other two sales rep. meetings. Boy am I glad I did. Considering the amount of man hours put into the installation, I got a bargain!

Jessie’s team worked from 8AM to 7PM for a total of 8 days to complete the installation during July 2023 ( the hottest July ever recorded ). I don’t know how they did it! Jessie answered all my questions during construction, and kept me informed of what would happen next.

Some of the asphalt shingles on parts of the roof with a low slope had to be scraped off. The majority of the roof had a steeper slope, and the new metal roof could be installed directly on top. People had warned me that metal roofs were noisy during rain or hail events. Not true! The shingles and underlayment have actually muffled the sounds that I would hear coming from my old asphalt shingle roof. The ice and water shields that were on my existing chimneys and vents were extended farther up each one. Some of the vertical siding was temporarily removed and put back so new ice and water shield could be placed on top of the water and ice shield that was already there.

I’m 70 years old so the lifetime guarantee may not mean much, but the ability to transfer to the next owner 50 more years of protection is huge!

My wife and I are very satisfied with the quality of materials, and the outstanding installation work done by Jessie and his team. It’s too bad that the rating companies only allow a 5 star rating for the best and most outstanding companies. A company like InterLock should get at least 10 stars.

If the VP of a company gives you his personal cell phone number that speaks volumes to the confidence he has in his products

5/5

From our initial consultation at our home with Carter and Brian (VP) to the installation we couldn’t be happier. When Brian gave us his personal cell phone number that did it for me. If the VP of a company gives you his personal cell phone number that speaks volumes to the confidence he has in his products. Carter came back a second time to put our minds at ease with our colour selection. Our installation crew was amazing! Maurice and Brian are top notch gentleman who did an amazing job. Having a pool, I was concerned about nails and other debris ending up in it. Well there was absolutely nothing in my pool. You could tell they took pride in the work they did because they took pictures of themselves in front of our home when it was complete. They seemed proud of the job they did. Maurice kept saying it has to be done right the first time because they don’t want to come back (although they are always welcome to stop by for a visit if they are in the area). We were initially concerned that the roof might be louder when it rains but it’s actually quieter. Our daughter used to wake up through the night when it rained but now she sleeps right through. It could be because they were able to go right over the existing asphalt shingles which also reduces landfill waste. I never thought I would get compliments on a roof. People walk by and say it looks great. When I pull up to my home I say wow that roof looks good! It’s a premium roof at a premium price but one shot and you are done.

The new roof is not only super functional for our New England location but it also looks beautiful!

5/5

We had a new metal roof installed on our entire home, and we are very pleased with the quality of the product. Our installation had to be scheduled for after some other work being done on the house, and Interlock was very flexible with our ever-evolving timeline. As soon as we were ready, they had a crew at our house within a week, and once they started, they were very quick to get the project done. The new roof is not only super functional for our New England location, but it also looks beautiful!

Our Interlock Metal roof is all we had hoped it would be!

5/5

Our Interlock Metal roof is all we had hoped it would be! Folks often stop by and ask about it. We direct them to the company with complete assurance that they will be as happy as we are. My photo doesn’t capture the bright blue color. When locals give directions that include our home, it is referred to as the “happy house.” Every season looks even more beautiful surrounding our home. The men who worked on it could not have been nicer, more thorough, or more patient with us!

We suffered a house fire that destroyed a large portion of our home

5/5

Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness

We suffered a house fire that destroyed a large portion of our home. After researching multiple metal roof options and comparing quotes from three different installers we selected Interlock without hesitation. The product design was important to us and we were impressed with the materials and finishes and believe it will last a long time. The slate styling was a definite upgrade for our roof. It sheds snow easily and completely and still looks new after two years so far. The warranty offered speaks volumes for the company. We have already recommended this roof to friends and I saved some scraps from the installation to show them how unique the design is!

My husband and I knew we had found the right company

5/5

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value

From the word Hello, my husband and I knew we had found the right company. We went direct to the Mfg, eliminating the middleman because Interlock has their own crews installing the roof. I never have to play the game of whether it’s the contractor’s fault or not; it’s the Mfg’s fault IF there is ever an issue with my roof!

Their Salesmen Mark, was always in contact with me, as is their business office – Jennifer was great – even when we delayed the job because of issues with our home out of our control. Once we gave the green light, their installation team was here within days and done within three days. They addressed rot we hadn’t anticipated, brought in their inspector to ensure the job was going smooth and answered questions we had. We are very shy with contractors due to a couple of misfortunes, so we were very leery about going with any contractor in general. We have renewed hope there is good in this world. I couldn’t be happier with not only the product but the company.

WE LOVE OUR ROOF! The best part is I’ll never have to worry again, and I can transfer my home into trust with confidence my family won’t have to worry again either! Thanks, Interlock!

No more ice dam on my low slope roof

5/5

Somersworth NH install. Great group of workers. They had the foreman check all work after. They are easy to contact, the price was ok, it’s not asphalt, and you get what you pay for. Don’t expect a price like an asphalt roof. I liked heavy gauge aluminum over those coated steel roofs. They can rust over time. Aluminum does not rust. I had it for over 1 year, with no issues, no leaks, snow falls good, and no more ice dam on my low slope roof. I even climbed up there to seal a few hairline cracks in my chimney mortar. Nice and durable. It’s worth it in the long run. The only thing I would recommend is please attach the siding near eaves security. Because as they insert flashing, they may need to pull out a few areas and nail them back. Just pay attention. There was one little loose area that was nailed in on my siding but needed to be locked in from the bottom. Overall great company, I do; the roof was secure, no loose shingles or flops. I highly recommend this company. I think the two areas near the eave of siding were done ok; they just needed the final touch. And it wasn’t even roof related. And the small siding area lasted a year till I had a heavy windstorm. I replaced that small area, and since ok. Just to be clear, my siding is older; it locks in differently. Don’t get the impression that they leave things floppy. Just have them check and pull on and areas they removed siding at the end.
